5 Tips to Stop a Bathroom Sink Leaking

You’ve had a stressful day, and it’s time to wind down and do some deep, relaxing thinking. Surely, no one could object to that.

So you decide to head to the bathroom for some time in the retro-throne, but as soon as you open the bathroom door, you get a shock. You see a steady flow of leaks coming from your sink.

Not the relaxing pampering experience you had in mind, is it?

So if you ever find yourself in this situation, here are some tips on how to stop your bathroom sink from leaking.

1. Clean Out the Sink Stopper

To fix a leak in the bathroom sink, one of the most important steps to take is to clean out the sink stopper. This should be the first step taken before any other repair is attempted.

Begin by removing the stopper and the pivot rod attached to it. Then use a screwdriver and a pair of pliers to unscrew the drain flange at the back of the sink. Once the flange is off, remove any gunk or residue that is clogging the stopper and pivot rod.

2. Replace Broken or Worn Down Fixtures

Start by shutting off the water valves that are underneath the sink. Unscrew the flexible hoses from the valve and remove the nuts that secure the fixtures to the sink. Now you can install the new fixtures by reversing the steps. Make sure you put the plumber’s tape on the threads of the new fixtures for a tight seal that can stop leaking the bathroom sink.

3. Tighten the Pipes Below the Sink

You will need to turn off the water in the room, and then remove any items from underneath the sink. If you can, use an adjustable wrench and turn the pipes clockwise to tighten them. Make sure not to over-tighten, though, as this could cause further damage.

4. Seal Any Holes or Cracks

To fix bathroom sink leaks, seal any holes or cracks with epoxy or putty. Make sure the crack is clean and dry before applying the material. Allow ample time for the epoxy or putty to sufficiently dry before attempting any further repair.

To properly apply the epoxy or putty, squeeze a small amount onto the crack and spread evenly with a putty knife or similar object. Carefully work the material into the crack, ensuring it is filled.

A thorough job should take 10-20 minutes. Then allow time for the material to completely dry and cure before using the sink again.
