Are University Dorms Really That Small?

We’ve all heard horror stories of college students living in mini dorm rooms all because universities have decided to quadruple the price of living on campus.

Thankfully, renting off campus is a lot safer and still has many perks. The problem is all those perks sound fantastic until you see the price of these apartments for yourself. You’ll be shocked about how much you can’t afford.

But the real question is, do university dorms get small? Read on to find out more.

What Is the Size of University Dorms?

University dorms vary in size, from tiny single rooms to large apartments with private suites. Many universities have dorms of different sizes and amenities. Smaller dorms are often designed for single students and usually have the bare necessities, such as a bed, desk, and closet.

Larger dorms are often designed for two or more students and may include kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, and larger bedrooms with extra storage. Generally, most dorms range between around 30 and 200 square feet, but they can be much larger or smaller depending on the university.

What Is Included in a Typical Dormitory?

It includes two to four beds, two desks, a vanity table, a closet, some shelves, and a few pieces of furniture. Some college dorms may include a mini refrigerator and microwave as well. Each student handles supplying their bedding, linens, and personal belongings.

Storage bins are also provided to keep all the student’s belongings organized. Every dorm has a shared student living area, kitchen, and many bathrooms. Now, if you are looking for one, the Lofts at City Center provide a unique living experience for University students with smaller living and study spaces.

Pros and Cons of Having a Small Space to Study at University

One pro is that there is limited physical space to be filled with distractions. This allows for more focus and also eliminates the need for organizing and clearing out the study space, which can take up time and energy. There is also a small financial benefit associated with living in a smaller space, as it can be more cost-effective than larger college dorms or apartments.

Unfortunately, though, having a small space to study in can have its drawbacks as well. There can be a feeling of confinement and isolation with limited space, which can make it difficult to feel productive and motivated.

What Can You Do to Maximize Space in a University Dorm

To maximize space in a university dorm room, the first thing to do is to get creative. A good place to start is to buy more multi-purpose furniture that can be a desk or a dresser when needed. Space-saving hangers and organized bins can be put under beds or on top of dressers to make the most out of space.

Use the height of the room, such as high bookcases, ceilings, and walls to hang items. Baskets work great for keeping items out of sight yet accessible. Lastly, remember to declutter, donate, or give away items such as books, clothes, and other non-essential items.

What to Expect in University Dorms

University dorms are indeed small, but this can be viewed as a positive thing. Staying in dorms in such close quarters encourages students to get creative and maximize their space efficiently. With smart organization and a few creative interior design tricks, university dorms can be transformed into cozy living quarters.
