5 Types of Burials and Their Significance

Death is all around us, such a large part of life that all we can do is embrace it. 6,000 people die every hour, 106 for every minute, and a shocking 2 people pass on every second. In a world with over 8 billion people and counting, we need a system to deal with all that death. As a result, most people are surprised to find, when speaking with a funeral home, that there are more types of burials than they realize. How many types of burials do you have to choose from?

Today, we will be looking at five options available to you.

1. In-Ground Burial

Burial rituals most commonly feature an in-ground burial. A person, in a coffin or casket, is buried 6 feet underground. The 6-foot tradition is an old custom from plague times in Europe, so the actual depth depends on the burial ground and grave keeper. The only major downside to an in-ground burial is that the grave could be disrupted. Only dirt and a wooden coffin protect the body from the elements.

2. Mausoleum Burial

Mausoleums are above-ground structures for housing bodies, usually made of stone. Mausoleums tend to be built for an entire family across multiple generations, but there are many community mausoleums, too. They are solid, beautiful structures highly resistant to the environment and tampering. Indoor mausoleums are more intimate experiences for connecting with the dead. You can walk right up to where your loved one is interred and be in close physical proximity to them.

3. Lawn Crypts

Lawn crypts are a form of above-ground burial that requires fewer death preparations since you don’t need to dig a hole. A crypt is just a sealed stone coffin, or a concrete one, for the deceased. Gravekeepers place the crypt on a pedestal that is built into the lawn, hence the name. Lawn crypts used to be very popular among royalty and high-ranking individuals. These days, they are much less popular due to the cost of the stone.

4. Natural Burials

Many people believe that our funeral burials are unnatural and problematic for nature. They would be right to an extent, especially when you consider the effects of formaldehyde and casket materials deep in the earth. If you feel that way, you may wish to have a natural burial. This is exactly what it sounds like. A body is buried directly in the earth without any casket or embalming. The idea is that you let the earth reclaim the body, continuing the cycle of life.

5. Tree Burial

This is a type of burial that has grown popular in recent years. Simply put, you bury someone with seeds and fertilizer – like a natural burial – for a large tree. The body provides for the tree as it grows. Rather than death being a tragedy, it brings something good into the world and helps the environment.

Find the Right Types of Burials

There are many types of burials to satisfy the desires of the deceased and the bereaved. Most get an in-ground, mausoleum, or natural burial. However, you can also go for a lawn crypt or tree burial if you so desire.
