As of 2018, there were roughly two million people working as engineers in the United States. If you’re thinking about pursuing engineering, you could be one of them!

Keep reading for the reasons why an engineering career could be a great choice for your future.

What Is Engineering?

Engineering involves solving problems and inventing new things or ideas using math and science concepts. It includes many different useful skills, such as research, critical thinking, and decision-making.

Since engineering is a broad category, it’s a part of lots of different fields, from medicine to the environment, cars to computers. This makes it easier to find types of engineering that fit your main interests.

You could be an aerospace engineer, electrical engineer, software engineer, chemical engineer…the list goes on and on!

What Are the Benefits of an Engineering Career?

While a career in engineering takes a bit of schooling to ensure you have all of the knowledge and skills necessary, there are many benefits that make all your hard work worth it. Here are a few of the reasons why one of my top career choices is being an engineer.

Variety of Opportunities

As we touched on earlier, an advantage to working as an engineer is that you have a wide variety of niches to choose from. It’s likely that an area you’re interested in – whether it’s renewable energy, biology, technology, or something else – requires an engineer.

Plus, being an engineer opens your job opportunities up to international destinations, as every country needs engineers.

High Potential Salary

Engineers are typically well-paid. In fact, many engineers starting an entry-level job make more than people in other professions with years of experience.

With some additional training and a few years of work under your belt, you can make even more.

Opportunity to Think Creatively

Many aspects of engineering involve tackling problems to try to find a unique solution. If you’re a creative person, this is an excellent way to put some of that imagination and inspiration to work.

Make a Difference

These days, people are prioritizing jobs that make a positive impact on the world. As an engineer, you can do just that.

Use your knowledge and skills to solve important issues like improving access to water across the globe or creating new prosthetics for people who need them.

Constant Demand Yet Always Changing

The good news is that engineers will always be in demand, as we’re constantly trying to improve the world.

This is the other good news: since technology is always changing, a job as an engineer will never be boring. You’ll find new problems to fix and information to discover.

For example, see what’s new in SOLIDWORKS this year.
